Aug. 22, 2024 - The Swedish Forest Agency reported roundwood prices on delivery timber increased for both sawlog and pulpwood during the second quarter of 2024 in comparison with the first quarter of 2024. The sawlog price increased by almost 8 percent and pulpwood by 5 percent.
Regionally, the greatest increase in sawlog prices was in Götaland by 5 percent, followed by Svealand with 3 percent. In Södra Norrland the sawlog prices increased by almost 2 percent while the price in Norra Norrland decreased by 1 percent compared to the previous quarter.
There is a greater increase in percent in the national than in the regional price due to that what is calculated is a volume-weighted average for the entire country, which is affected by the distribution of the volume between the regions.
Regarding pulpwood prices, there is a decrease in the north but continued increase in the south of Sweden. In Svealand and Götaland the price on pulpwood increased by 4 and 5 percent respectively. The pulpwood prices in Norra Norrland and Södra Norrland decreased by almost 1 and 2 percent respectively.
When comparing with the same quarter last year, the trend of increasing roundwood prices continues. Overall, sawlog prices increased by 33 percent. Regionally, the sawlog prices increased by 36 percent in Svealand while the prices in Södra Norrland and Götaland increased by 21 and 28 percent respectively. In Norra Norrland the sawlog prices increased by 9 percent.
Delivery purchase is a method which means that the forest owner themselves, with or without the help of employees or contractors, delivers their wood to the roadside. Delivery purchases account for less than 10 percent of the total sold quantity.
Please note that the average prices are volume-weighted roundwood quantities. These prices refer to current prices, which do not take into account inflation.
The survey is part of Official Statistics of Sweden.
The Swedish Forest Agency is the national authority in charge of forest-related issues. Its main function is to promote the kind of management of Sweden's forests that enables the objectives of forest policy to be attained.
