Metsä Fibre Concludes Change Negotiations at Joutseno Pulp Mill; Workers Face Temporary Layoffs

Joutseno pulp mill Located in Lappeenranta, Finland, the Joutseno pulp mill has the capacity to produce 690,000 tonnes per year of softwood pulp, which is used as raw material for paperboard, tissue and printing papers.

Aug. 27, 2024 - Metsä Fibre announced that it has concluded the change negotiations on possible temporary layoffs at Joutseno pulp mill on 26 August 2024. The negotiations covered the entire workforce of the Joutseno pulp mill, a total of approximately 190 people.

On Aug. 5, Metsä Fibre first announced possible layoffs at Joutseno pulp mill and said the measures are due to a need for temporary adjustment of production to meet low delivery volumes.

In a press release, Metsä Fibre said, "After the change negotiations, it was decided that the Joutseno pulp mill will implement temporary layoffs for the personnel as needed due to the order backlog.

"The needed temporary layoffs will be implemented between September 2024 and January 2025 and will last for a maximum of 90 days.

"The allocation, amounts and dates of layoffs will be specified by the end of this year," the company concluded.

Metsä Fibre, part of Metsä Group, produces not only pulp and sawn timber but also other bioproducts such as biochemicals and bioenergy.
